The Cadets Brigade Inter Battalion Combat Sports Week Competition is one of the major training event in the Nigerian Defence Academy cadets training program, that is aimed at amongst other things like physical endurance and healthy rivalry which the competition is expected to create, it also helps to enhance team work, leadership qualities and a good spirit of sportsmanship amongst the cadets.
The competition involved both male and female cadets of the four Battalions in NDA which are Abyssinia, Burma, Dalet and Mogadishu Battalion respectively, all participated accordingly. Combat sports week includes Boxing, Taekwondo, judo and wrestling, all are method of self defence which is well known as unarmed combat. Unarmed combat training is an important subject in military officer’s battle training for the human body and strength and also a fundamental weapon in any conflict.
The aim of unarmed combat is to kill or render an enemy ineffective, and the achievement of a high standard of proficiency in unarmed combat will promote self defence, determination, courage and fighting spirit. In the academy, combat sport training package was not fully implemented for the past ten years. To enhance cadets training, the present commandant, Maj Gen MT Ibrahim has re-introduced combat sport training and provided all necessary equipment for both cadets’ training and competition. At the end of 2016 NDA combat sport competition, Mogadishu Battalion came first, Abyssina second, Dalet third and Burma took the fourth position.
