NDA Honours Foremost Defence Minister, Commissions More Projects

In a bid to further immortalize Nigeria’s foremost Minister of Defence, Alhaji Muhammadu Ribadu, the Commandant Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA) Major General MT Ibrahim has renovated and renamed the Roundabout leading into the NDA Old Site, as well as renamed the NDA Old Site Campus of the NDA Post Graduate School, ‘Ribadu Campus’.
The roundabout, which hitherto was in a total state of disrepair and hardly noticed by passers-by, has now been turned into an aesthetically appealing landmark, with beautiful lawns adorned with lovely flowers, palms, solar powered lighting emblazoned with the NDA crest over it and a neatly hewn marble structure with the inscription: Nigerian Defence Academy, Post Graduate School, Ribadu Campus.

While commissioning the project, the Guest of Honour, Ambassador Yusuf Maitama Sule (CFR), Danmasanin Kano, thanked the NDA Commandant for deeming it fit “to honour a man who laid the foundation for the Nigerian Armed Forces and fought for the welfare of its officers and men.” Ambassador Maitama Sule further congratulated the NDA Commandant on the laudable project the Academy is undertaking and urged him to keep up the tempo.
It would be recalled that Alhaji Mohammadu Ribadu was Nigeria’s first Minister of Defence immediately after Independence in 1960. He is famed with having overseen the expansion of the numerical strength of the Nigerian Armed Forces, an upgrade of military hardware, the renovation of military barracks across the country, the development of the infant Nigerian Navy and the establishment of the Nigerian Air Force. It was also under his watch that the Nigerian Defence Academy was established in 1964.

Earlier in his remarks, the Commandant NDA, Major General MT Ibrahim, said he felt duty bound to honour Alhaji Muhammadu Ribadu after the Guest of Honour had earlier pointed out that the foremost Nigerian Defence Minister was not adequately represented in the institution. The Commandant also said the Nigerian Armed Forces owes a depth of gratitude to Alhaji Muhammadu Ribadu because of his noble contributions to the development of the Nigerian Armed Forces.

In a similar vein, the Academy witnessed the commissioning of the new NDA Magazine. Commissioning the project, the Guest of Honour, Chairman House Committee on Defence, Honourable Aliyu Betera, who was represented by Honourable Aliyu Isa, acknowledged that the Military had made this country proud and that the National Assembly, especially the House of Representative, is committed to ensuring that the Military receives all the necessary support. He assured that House members are aware of the financial crises in the country but promised that whatever is allocated to the Nigerian Military will be promptly released.

Describing the NDA Magazine, the Commander, 41DIV Engineers, Brigadier General Yaro, who designed and executed the project, disclosed the Magazine has requisite and adequate security measures in place.
Whilst appreciating the Guest of Honour, Honourable Aliyu Betara, for always supporting the NDA and her objectives, the Commandant said the Magazine is an important installation in the life of any military institution. He expressed his joy on the completion of the NDA Magazine.

The Occasion was graced by the Executive Governor of Kaduna State, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai, adequately represented by the Deputy Governor, Kaduna State, Architect Barnabas Bala Bantex, who was the Special Guest of Honour for the NDA Tree Planting ceremony which held earlier. Other dignitaries at the event include, the Infantry Corp Commander, Nigerian Army, Major General A Mohammed, members of the House Committee on Defence, the NDA Deputy Commandant, Air Vice Marshal CE Okoye, senior military and civilian officers of the Academy and other invited guests.
