Senate Committee on Defence Visits the NDA

In pursuance of credible and transparent governance, the Senate Committee on Defence performed their oversight function by visiting the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA) to ascertain the extent of the implementation of the NDA Year 2016 capital projects.

Presenting the Brief, the Academy Architect, Squadron Leader O Daodu emphasized that selective tendering was done in the first quarter while some selected projects were awarded via open tendering. He also said that proper examination of project status and progress of work was done. According to him, some of the completed projects are: NDA Logo Monuments, state of the art conference rooms, indoor gallery range and expanded obstacle crossing course. Others are, newly built faculty of military science, renovation of battalion lines, renovation of cadetâ€™s mess and renovation of drill shed.

Reacting to the brief, the Chairman of the committee, Senator Ahmed Lawan commended the NDA for a job well done. He described their interaction with the academy as pleasant and noted that NDA is exceptional because of quality leadership and praised the military for contributing significantly to the development of Nigeria saying that Nigeria will be great if we make the armed forces great. Continuing, he applauded the Commandant Major General MT Ibrahim for having done so much within a short period of time. He said that the activities in NDA are characterized by good leadership, innovation and creative insight of the Commandant. Senator Ahmed Lawan said he was impressed that fund allocated to NDA was used judiciously and for the purpose it was meant for. Lending his voice was a member of the Committee, Lieutenant General Jeremiah Useni (rtd) who urged the Commandant to deal with the present challenges in the academy while also focusing on the future.

The Commandant Major General MT Ibrahim appreciated the single handed commitment of the Senate to the infrastructural development in NDA and promised that NDA will surmount the financial and security challenges and will not relent in churning out qualified officers that will compete favourably with their counterparts across the world.

Highlight of the visit was a tour to the completed and ongoing projects in the Academy.
