NDA Holds Novices Boxing For SSC44 Army

Novices Boxing is one of the key programmes of the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA) designed and aimed at instilling courage and boldness within cadets, as well as enhancing their physical and mental development. The event which is hosted periodically for fresh cadets of the Academy, is an amateur non competitive boxing exercise used to build up cadet’s confidence, courage and the ability to withstand tough treatment and circumstances. It inculcates in them stamina and an aggressive winning spirit. This year’s event was organized for the cadets of Short Service Course 44 Army (SSC44 ARMY) and participation was for all medically fit cadets.

Declaring the exercise open, the Guest of Honour and the Director of Coordination (DCOORD) NDA, Commodore AO Adaji, said that situations may arise where combatants in the battlefield may have to rely on unarmed combat to disarm their enemies. According to him, in situations like that, they will be required to draw from the experience they have acquired during novices boxing and other unarmed combat training that they would acquire in NDA to defend themselves and overcome their enemies. He therefore enjoined all cadets taking part in the exercise to exhibit courage and ability to give and receive punches. To the Instructors and officials from Kaduna State Sports Council, he urged them to stick to the ethics of the sport and to abide by their respective roles in order to make the event a big success.

Each boxing bout consisted of three rounds each of one minute duration. An interval of one minute rest was observed between rounds.

Bringing the event to a close, the Special Guest of Honour Commodore AO Adaji who said he was delighted that the cadets have successfully taken part in the critical aspect of their training in NDA likened the event to Olympic Games where the benefit of participation is worth more than the assessment of the outcome. According to him, win or lose, the benefits are remarkable. He commended the cadets for successfully completing the exercise and showing courage, boldness and empathy, saying that the enemy is unrelenting and does not fight fair so the courage and boldness they gained from the event will help them dismantle the enemy. He applauded them for displaying mutual respect and spirit of sportsmanship.
