The Association for Aquatic Sciences of Nigeria (AASN) in collaboration with Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA) Consultancy Services Limited organized their 32nd Annual Conference and International Workshop at the Ejoor hall of the NDA Ribadu Cantonment. The theme of this year’s conference is “Wealth Creation through Fish farmingâ€.

In his speech, the Chairman of the event and the former Commandant NDA, Major General MT Ibrahim, who applauded the efforts of the organizers, said it is a positive attitude to provide opportunities and to undertake ventures that promote individual development and nation building. He admonished them to make fish farming a lucrative engagement and praised them for keeping the flag flying for 32 years.

Delivering the keynote address Professor of Fisheries Biology, Dean Faculty of Science, Imo State University Owerri, Professor Keke Ibeawuchi Romanus noted that one of the ways to reduce the nation’s importation of goods $ services and preserve our foreign reserves is to produce what we consume locally which he said fisheries subsector contributes significantly to Nigeria’s total Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and is known as the fastest food production sector in the world. He concluded by saying that Nigeria can generate wealth and solve unemployment problem through fish farming. He encouraged participants to embrace small scale, medium scale or large scale fish farming in other to be self reliant and to provide employment opportunities.

The two day event witnessed presentation of Lead Papers. Dr Ladan Adamu Aliyu, the Managing Consultant, Fishhouse Consult Limited Kaduna presented a paper titled “Hatchery Operation†while Aisha Mauktar Inuwa delivered on the topic “Fish Processing, Packaging and Marketingâ€. The 3rd topic “Ponds Construction†was presented by Timothy Whegon of School of Agricultural Technology, Nuhu Bamali Polytechnic Zaria Kaduna State.
