Following his assumption of office as Commandant NDA, and the subsequent Passing Out activities for cadets of 62 Regular Course and Short Service Course 43 that followed immediately, the Commandant NDA, Major General Mohammed Tasi’u Ibrahim has paid a courtesy visit to the Air Force Institute of Technology (AFIT), Kaduna.


Whilst noting that the visit to AFIT was the first in a series of visits he would embark on to institutions of interest around the vicinities of the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA), Major General MT Ibrahim noted that it was necessitated by the proximity of AFIT to NDA and their common interests, which relate to training. He further noted that the visit also provides an opportunity for both institutions interface and assess the potentialities of strong cooperation between them and mutual benefits derivable from it. He disclosed that AFIT remains a tremendous asset to the Nigerian Air Force and the nation as a whole. He further indicated NDA’s eagerness to tap into AFIT’s experience and assets, particularly in the training of its engineering cadets.



According to the Commandant NDA, the Academy is undergoing reforms in the training of cadets with the sole aim of improving the quality of products of the NDA by making them competent, capable, willing, able and ready officers of the armed forces. He stated that AFIT could be a veritable partner in the current reformation process through capacity building mutually beneficial interactions. General Ibrahim, who informed the AFIT Commandant and his Principal Staff Officers that the Academy was rejuvenating old values for which she was known for, assured them that the nation will witness a different breed of graduates from the Nigerian Defence Academy in the next couple of years resulting from the current reforms. He averred that the armed forces will be greatly enhanced by the quality of graduates that are soon to emanate from the Academy.


Responding to the remarks by the Commandant NDA, the Commandant AFIT, Air Vice Marshal Musbau Adekunle Soladoye, expressed his gratification over the former’s visit, noting that both institutions have enjoyed a long and mutually beneficial relationship. He traced relations between both institutions to 1985 when the Nigerian Defence Academy commenced degree programmes. According to him, when the degree programmes commenced, AFIT, being a technical school at the time, offered its facilities to NDA for use. He revealed that the relationship has grown since then, noting that at present about 30% of resource persons currently in AFIT are from the Nigerian Defence Academy. AVM Soladoye further thanked the Commandant NDA for sustaining the warm ties between both institutions. He assured the Commandant NDA that the AFIT is always ready to support the Nigerian Defence Academy when called upon to do so.
The Commandant’s visit to AFIT was his first to any institution since his assumption to office on 7 August, 2015. He was accompanied on the visit by the NDA’s Director of Administration, Commodore MI Lekwot, and other officers of the Academy.
