President of the Defence and Police Officers Wives Association (DEPOWA), Mrs Omobolanle Olonisakin has commended the Nigerian Defence Academy for what she described as its prowess in handling the task of young boys and girls to become officers who would be positioned for leadership and greater responsibility of protecting the territorial integrity of the Nigeria.

Mrs Olanisakin who made this known when she led executive members of DEPOWA on the Commandant NDA, Major General MT Ibrahim, at the Academy Headquarters, further enumerated the objectives of DEPOWA to include among others fostering friendship and unity among members, improving the lives of children, empowering women and families, as well as educating and enlightening women through seminars, workshops and symposia.
Tracing the history of DEPOWA to its founding in 1970, Mrs Olonisakin disclosed that the Association was initially known as Armed Forces and Police Consultative Committee and major aim was to encourage members to be responsible Officers wives in the midst of challenges faced by their spouses in the course of their duties. She noted that the roles of the association have since grown to accommodate many charitable activities.
She therefore appealed to the Commandant to support DEPOWA in carrying out some of her projects. She also appealed to him and other Officers present to encourage their wives to participate in DEPOWA activities noting that their activities were for national interest.

Responding, the Commandant Major General MT Ibrahim described the activities of Depowa as laudable and promised that the NDA will collaborate with them to ensure they continue to make an impact in the lives of the less privileged ones. He also promised to assist the association.
He said their visit showed the special attachment they have on NDA and expressed his appreciation on behalf of NDA to them. He also appreciated their husbands especially the Chief of Defence staff, the Inspector General of Police and other Principal Officers for their relentless efforts in maintaining the territorial integrity of Nigeria and Depowa for standing solidly behind their husbands in the actualization of their mandates.
The DEPOWA Executive Members took a familiarization tour of the NDA facilities. Places of interest visited were the Academic Branch, Directorate of Information and Communication Technology (DICT), Academy Library, Nigerian Navy Simulation Center, Cadets’ Mess and the Medical Center.
