NDA Holds Fourth Registry Lecture Series

The Nigerian Defence Academy Registry Department has convened its fourth registry lecture series with the theme: Enhancing the Quality of Administration in the Nigerian University System. The lecture series which was primarily targeted at the administrative staff of the Registry was aimed at enhancing contribution to the achievement of the Academy’s objectives, to meet capacity building of staff as well as sharpen individual skills for effective service delivery.



The Special Guest of Honour at the event, Major General MT Ibrahim, Commandant NDA, who was represented by the Deputy Commandant, Air Vice Marshal CE Okoye, said the lecture series was timely and necessary, in view of the vital need to enhance skills among staff and also encourage interaction between sister institutions. He added that the lecture series was equally important to people in leadership position, adding that it is the right step in the direction. He urged all staff to develop themselves in order to encourage competence and professionalism, with a view of moving the Academy to the next level of professionalism. 


At the lecture series, two lecture papers were presented and discussed. The first, titled Performance Management System in Nigerian Universities: Challenges and Prospects was presented by Alhaji Dalhatu O. Mamman, the Registrar, Nasarawa state University, Keffi, while the second paper, titled Leadership and Human Capacity Building - was presented by Dr Modupe O. Ajayi, the Registrar, Federal University of Technology Akure.


Alhaji Dalhatu O. Mamman, while presenting his paper took his audience down memory lane by familiarizing them with the evolution and establishment of Academic Institution during the period of colonialization and how it has evolved to this modern era. He spoke about the 3 cardinal roles of Institutions which he said are Teaching, Research and community services adding that they are the bed rocks of all institutions. He pointed out the challenges militating against the implementation of an effective performance management system in Universities. He advised for the use of modern methods which are more objective and reliable and a need for continuity and computerization of performance appraisals. 



While presenting her paper on Leadership and Human Capacity Building, Dr Modupe O. Ajayi, reiterated the need for human capital development in Nigerian Universities system.  Dr Ajayi pointed out that university system has occupied a unique position in the development and growth of the human race.  She disclosed that the 21st century will be driven by knowledge based economies, which will create wealth, prosperity and well-being of nations.


She added that with the fast changing scenario in the world, training and re-training of personnel remains key to building strong institutions. She therefore advised the Academy to embrace the culture of training and re-training. All participants were encouraged to place premium on training and personal development with emphases laid on how to improve quality of service delivery in Nigerian universities. She concluded by stating that the success of the reforms required for the reformation of work ethics in an institution depends on the developing and sustaining an appropriate workplace.
