The Defence Attache (DA) of the Republic of Benin to Nigeria, Lieutenant Colonel Mohammed Sake, has paid a courtesy visit to the Nigerian Defence Academy.
The visiting DA, who indicated that he resumed work in Nigeria just over a year ago, said that his visit to NDA was necessitated by the need to show some gratitude and appreciation to the Academy for the arduous task of training cadets for the Republic of Benin. He further noted that as the Defence Attache, his visit to NDA was inevitable, not just to show appreciation for the great contributions NDA is making towards training officers for the Beninese military, but also to interact and obtain a firsthand experience of the nature of the cadets’ training and welfare at the Nigerian Defence Academy.
Addressing the visiting DA, the Commandant NDA, Major General Mohammed Tasi’u Ibrahim, informed him the NDA takes great pride in its relationship with sister African countries, particularly to members of ECOWAS, to which Nigeria and Benin Republic are members of. General Ibrahim traced the history of foreign cadets’ training in NDA to decades back, noting that he met some Beninese cadets training in NDA when he resumed training as a cadet in the 1980s. He expressed delight that Benin Republic has continued its training with the Academy.
Major General Ibrahim also assured the visiting Defence Attache that with the recent improvements and upgrade in the standard of training in the Nigerian Defence Academy, the Beninese cadets at the completion of their training in NDA will be ready and fit to serve and protect the territorial integrity of their country.
The Commandant further reiterated the importance of bilateral relations, particularly between the military, noting that in spite of the tremendous advancements the world has seen in the area of technology, nations seem more fragmented than ever. He therefore called for greater ties between friendly nations. He further informed Lieutenant Colonel Sake that NDA is in the process of improving and restructuring its languages department to make it more practical oriented. He therefore informed the DA that soon the Academy will be reaching out to him for assistance in facilitating a tour for NDA languages cadets to the Republic of Benin. This he noted will help the cadets acquire practical use of the French language.
Currently there are two Beninese cadets undergoing regular combatants training in the Nigerian Defence Academy.
