France’s Defence Attache (DA) to Nigeria, Colonel Movic Humbert, has presented some specialized text books for advancing the learning the French language at the Nigerian Defence Academy, Kaduna.
The Military Attaché, who was on a visit to the Nigeria Defence Academy, re-emphasized the importance of education to the growth of a nation and the vital role NDA plays in the training and development at future leaders. He also pointed out the importance of learning French language in Nigeria, bearing in mind that the country is surrounded by French speaking neighboring countries. The DA further averred that a good knowledge of the French language will help strengthen bilateral ties between Nigeria and its neigbours and help during military operations.
Colonel Humbert, who went on to buttress the merits of learning other languages to bridge language barriers, further expressed his country’s willingness to fully explore ways on how best to assist the cadets to be more proficient in speaking French. This he said has been demonstrated by his country’s eagerness to help, through the donation of the 1st Method “Move Forward†450 Books for the cadets, and other books and CDs for the instructors, with a promise to bring more books in the future.
While responding to the remarks made by the Defence Attache, the Commandant Nigerian Defence Academy, Major General MT Ibrahim, expressed his appreciation to the French representative, stating that it was indeed gratifying and heart - warming to witness such a noble input into the languages department in NDA, which he said is in line with the recent reforms in NDA and genuine efforts towards enhancing proficiency in languages.
The Commandant further stressed the need for Nigeria to imbibe the traits as seen in the global world by eliminating any forms of language barrier which could pose a problem in the future. While thanking the French Embassy for their support, the Commandant stressed the importance of language diversification in Nigeria and expressed the willingness for NDA to remain on the forefront of promoting language diversity and religious tolerance.
On possible areas of assistance, it was revealed that cadets from NDA will be sent to France for further studies, possible arrangements will be made for conferences in France and hopefully French language will be included as a compulsory course for 67 Regular Course. All these the Commandant said will further boost bilateral ties, strengthen interaction and bring about better mutual understanding.
