The Nigerian Defence Academy is to create an NDA Museum. The Commandant of the institution, Major General MT Ibrahim stated this when the curator of the National Museum Kaduna paid him a courtesy call at the Academy Headquarters, recently.
Major General MT Ibrahim said the NDA is a reservoir of history, as right from inception in 1964 there have been key players who passed through the NDA they have helped in shaping the military and political history of Nigeria.
The NDA Commandant noted that the National Commission for Museums and Monuments, as a body that is vested with the task of preserving the heritage, history, culture, values and monuments of the country has over the years, garnered enough experience and would help the NDA in its bid to create its own museum. General MT Ibrahim, who expressed delight at the curator’s visit, stated that over the years, there is a conscious effort in NDA to preserve history of various commanders in different Theatres of Operation and their leadership styles. He further opined that some of the security challenges the country is facing is because most young Nigerians are not connected with Nigeria’s history.
Earlier the Curator of the National Museum, Alhaji Shuai’bu Musa, stated that the National Museum team was at NDA to solicit support in its bid to stage an exhibiting which would include both civil and military heritage and monuments.
Alhaji Shuai’bu Musa also stated that the National commission for museum and monuments would value a partnership between itself and the NDA in its research and development of military archives.
During the visit, the Commandant directed the NDA Curator, Mr .O. Akinrele and the NDA Librarian, Dr Umar Lawal, to head a team from NDA that would partner with the team from the National Commission for Museums and Monuments to work out possible areas of collaboration between both institutions.
