History

At inception in 1985, the Department commenced as Department of Economics, awarding only B.Sc Degree in Economics. In 1987 the Department was changed to the Department of Economics and Management Sciences as result of the introduction of B.Sc degree programme in Accounting. However, following the restricting of NDA academic programme in 2002, a combined degree programme in Economics/Accounting was introduced in place of the initial separate degree programmes in Economics and Accounting.

The National Universities Commission Resource Verification Team visited the department in December 2007 to access unapproved/new academic programme. After the verification and assessment exercise, the National Universities Commission gave approval for the splitting of the combined degree programme in Economics/Accounting into separate degree programmes in Economics and Accounting respectively.

The B.Sc degree programmes in Accounting and Economics have the following objectives:

a)       To produce and develop qualified Accountants and Economics/cadet officers imbued with an enthusiasm for research and equipped with theories and techniques that will enable them to advance accounting and Economics knowledge and to society problems relating to Accounting and Economics.

b)       To train officer cadets who are not just familiar with accounting theories, but who are also conscious of the limitations of the theories as they relate to a less developing country setting like that of Nigeria.

c)       To train officer cadets who are not only knowledgeable in conventional Accounting and Economics fields also in aspect of defence and military finance.

d)       To train officer cadets who are thoroughly familiar with the Nigerian Accounting and Economics scene and their relationship to the International economic environment and who can design and formulate accounting policies, which are socially relevant to the Nigerian Armed Forces and the Nigerian society in general.
