History


1. The Department of Mechanical Engineering commenced activities in September 1989 with an initial strength of four Academic staff and three non-academic staff.  The training in the Department was designed to last for five years and provide Officer Cadets with knowledge and understanding of the scientific basis of engineering and the use of such knowledge for the benefit of the Nigerian Armed Forces.  Furthermore, the training is aimed at giving the Cadets attributes that are essential for a progressive and continuous development of a career of exemplary service to the nation.  
 
2. The Department graduated it’s first Bachelor of Engineering (B.Eng) Degree Cadets at the end of the 1992/93 academic session.   In 2007, the Department commenced postgraduate programmes leading to the award of Masters of Engineering (M.Eng) and Doctors of Philosophy (PhD) in Mechanical Engineering.  From 2007 to 2016 the Department graduated 377 (B.Eng) degree cadets, 5 Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree graduates and 49 M.Eng graduates.
 
 
FUNCTIONS
3. The Department is saddled with the responsibility of providing academic training leading to the award of Bachelor of Engineering (B.Eng) at the undergraduate level for officer cadets, including Masters of Engineering (M.Eng) degree and Doctors of Philosophy (PhD) at the postgraduate level open to both Military and Civilian students.
 
ACHIEVEMENTS
4. The Department has been able to produce the following number of officers and civilians over  the years (1989 – 2016):
 
a.    41 – 64 Regular Courses Cadets - 377 Officers
b.    M.Eng (Mechanical Engineering) graduates -  49
c.     PhD graduates -  05
d.    Currently Department has 1(one) PhD and Nineteen (19) M.Eng and Sixteen (16) PGDME students for convocation in October 2017
 
5. Today it has grown into full status with ten laboratories and workshops fully equipped and functional starting from only three Laboratories and workshops on inception.  The Department also recently received Laboratory equipment for Mechatronics, Autotronics and Refrigeration and Air Conditioning from PTDF as part of its intervention in tertiary institutions.
 
RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT
 
6. The Department has carried out many researches at both undergraduates (cadets), postgraduate and individuate/group levels.  Notably the ME Department produced many prototype projects some of which are in-line for mass production  and patenting this include the following within this academic session 2015/2016.
 
a. Design and construction and testing of cadets foldable 3 seater desk, 
b. Design, construction and testing of improved multi-purpose Brick/Block Industry Machine
c. Design, construction and testing of military side-car for NDA Permanent Site perimeter patrol
d. Design, construction and testing of Remote Control Improvise Explosive Devise Disposal equipment,
e, Design, construction and testing of Remote Control Gun position systems, 
f.  Design, construction and testing of deep freezer for cadets’ bust camp, 
g. Design, construction and testing of pineapple juice extractors among others.
h. Design and construction of Solar Meat (Kilishi) Dryer 
i.  Design and construction of Static/Dynamic Balancing Machine.
j.  Design and construction of Masa Fryer.
 
7. Serial a-i all carried out within this session are ready for mass production and patent.  Some pictures below.
 
8. The Department also carried out design of Cold room for NDA cadets’ Mess awaiting Comdt’s approval to start construction.  
 
9. The Department represented the Academy at the AHQ ATIC INNOVATION AND INVENTION DISPLAY 5-7 MAY 16 to show case some of its prototypes, 
 
COLLABORATION AND MEMORANDUM OF UNDERSTANDING (MOU)
10. The Department established collaboration  with some scholars to compete for the PTDF Annual and Gas Research Grant competition. 
 
11. The Department established collaboration with Nigeria Police to study and repair and upgrade their TELEROBOT.
 
12. The Department was recently visited by the Rector, Nigerian Army Institute of Technology and Environmental Studies, Makurdi for the purpose of establishing collaboration and MOU.
 
13. The brief above highlighted mainly the introduction and achievements of the Department which include students graduated, research and development, and collaboration with other institutions within the session 2015/2016.
