Objectives and function of taxation: Pre and Post colonial tax administration in Nigeria. Personal income tax: the law and practice of income tax relating to individuals, employment income, basis of assessments, settlements, trusts and estates, Offences and penalties. Direct assessment: Sole traders and Partnership assessments - treatments of losses; computation of assessable income;   commencement and cessation of trade or business. ACC 315 – MANAGEMENT THEORY & PRACTICE

ACC 317 PRODUCTION MANAGEMENT I

The main objective of the course is introduce students to production management as a strategic function of business as well as get them to appreciate essentials of production and operation management. Emphasis will be placed on theoretical and analytical skills in production management. Other issues to be covered include production system and types; Role of production management; Product and service design; Plant location, layout and operation; Techniques for planning and location analysis such as factor rating method, transportation model, centre of gravity method, assignment model and multiple criterial method. It introduces the students to topics such as Productivity Analysis, Forecasting Techniques, Regression and correlation analysis, Inventory models techniques and project management analysis. It also allows more emphasis on computer solutions with excel spreadsheets.

 

ACC 318 – PUBLIC FINANCE

ACC 319: ENTERPRENEURAL DEVELOPMENT I

This course is designed to help students evaluate the business skills and commitment necessary to successfully operate an entrepreneurial venture and review the challenges and rewards of entrepreneurship. Students will learn about themselves, their decisions, and their goals to determine how entrepreneurship can play a role in their lives. Students will also be introduced to entrepreneurship from an economic perspective and the concepts of environmentally sustainable practices and social entrepreneurship. Opportunities in entrepreneurship, the basic characteristics required for successful performance as an entrepreneur, nature and function of entrepreneurs, types, roles demands identification and evaluation of business opportunities, feasibility study. ACC 322 – COST ACCOUNTING II

Costing methods – Job and Batch costing, contract costing, operation and service costing, process costing, joint and by product costing, forecasting, Budgeting system, cash budget and working capital, cost volume profit (CVP) analysis, introduction to decision making techniques i.e. Short-Run Decision making, Standard Costing and Budgetary control, Variances and Variance Analysis; Quantity, rate efficiency variance analysis.

 

ACC 323 – TAXATION II

Company’s tax - the principles and scope of company tax: Educational tax; The small company provisions including definition, computations and exemptions: Tax incentives, tax avoidance, tax planning and tax evasion: capital transfer, tax transfer, inter-vivo and transfer on death and computation of transfer: Pioneer legislation, tax audit and investigation, Transaction taxes: Value Added Tax, Withholding tax and stamp duties. Petroleum profit Tax – overview, nature, scope and computation; Transfer tax;  Double taxation; Taxation of specialize businesses-  Real estate, agriculture, Transportation and telecommunication, taxation of enterprises in free trade zones.

 

ACC 324 – COMPANY LAW & ACCOUNTS OF BANKRUPTCY, EXECUTORSHIPS & TRUST

The Bankruptcy Act of 1979; -Concept of Bankruptcy; Act of Bankruptcy; Bankruptcy Proceedings – (a) Bankruptcy Petition (b) Receiving order; (c) Appointment and Powers of Official Receiver and Trustee (d) Composition and Schemes of Arrangement (e) Proof and Debt (f) Adjudication and Discharge of the Bankrupt;  Statement of Affairs and Deficiency Accounts; Executorships Law, Wills and Letters of Administration; Powers and Duties of Executors, Administration and Distribution of Estate etc; Trusteeship Law: Appointment, Duties, Obligations, Accounts and Termination of Trust. 

 

ACC 325 – MARKETING MANAGEMENT

Application of the fundamental principles of management to the marketing function.  The organization, planning, control & coordination of the marketing function.  Organisation of the marketing plan; coordination and interaction of the whole marketing function (product, physical distribution, pricing and promotion), marketing and social responsibility, consumer behaviour, etc.

 

ACC 326 – ENTREPRENEURAL DEVELOPMENT II

Feasibility study, financial and managing growth entrepreneurial firms: negotiations, succession, socio-cultural constraints theories of entrepreneurship. ACC 327 PRODUCTION MANAGEMENT II

This course examines the functional area of production and operations management in the manufacturing industry. Topics include decision-making, operation scheduling; capacity planning, aggregate planning, project planning and network analysis with critical path method and PERT; forecasting and production analysis including time series and regression analysis, inventory management, distribution planning, materials requirements planning (MRP), project management and quality control objectives and procedure; production facilities and maintenance.

 

ACC 328 – OIL & GAS ACCOUNTING

Introducing the Nigerian Petroleum Industry.  The differences between the downstream and upstream sectors of the industry.  An overview of downstream operations in Nigeria.  Accounting principles, Practices and procedures relating to various phases of oil and gas operations.  Accounting for Crude Oil Refining Petrol-Chemical Operations and Liquefied Natural Gas Operations.  The Accountant role in Managing the Downstream Sector.  Petroleum Producing Pricing and Marketing.  Estimating reserves and values.  The concept of fair value in oil and gas accounting.  Types of operating contract in the Nigeria Petroleum Industry – Joint Ventures (V), Production Share Contract (SC) and Service Contracts (SC).  Financial and Fiscal Monitoring Mechanism.  Accounting Standards and Auditing in the petroleum Industry.  Financial Accounting principles followed by oil and gas producers.

 

ACC 329 ANALYSIS FOR BUSINESS DECISIONS

This course is designed to give students a working knowledge of the analytical tools that bear most directly on the economic decisions firms must regularly make. We will emphasize market structure and industrial performance, including the strategic interaction of firms. We will examine the behavior of individual markets -- and the producers and consumers that sell and buy in those markets -- in some detail, focusing on cost analysis, the determinants of market demand, pricing strategy, market power, and the implications of government regulatory policies. We will also examine the implications of economics on other business practices, such as incentive plans, auctions, and transfer pricing.

Corporate Financial Statements for Publication purposes (IAS 1,IAS 33, IAS 34 & IFRS 13): Statement of profit or loss and other comprehensive income, Statement of Financial Position, Statement of Changes in Equity, Cash flow statement (IAS 7),  Theoretical and regulatory framework of Consolidated Accounts (IFRS 10, IAS 27); Presentation of consolidated Accounts, elimination of intra-group balances and profits on intra-group transactions, the treatment of non-controlling interest and cost of control, Treatment of dividends for consolidated purposes. 

 

ACC 412 – MANAGEMENT  ACCOUNTING I

This course examines management accounting practices directed towards the effective and efficient use of organizational resources. This includes the design and operation of management accounting systems for planning and control purposes; the use of management accounting practices to support effective resource management and to achieve process improvement; and the study of behavioral implications of management accounting practices and how the latter are shaped by human processes. Topics include nature, objectives and methods of management accounting, organization of management accounting departments. Cost accounting systems. General principles of costing. Capacity decision using marginal and direct costing, break-even analysis. Behavioral aspects of costs. Elements of cost: fixed, variable and semi-variable cost.

 

ACC 413 – PUBLIC SECTOR ACCOUNTING I

Introduction of public sector accounting: meaning and concept; Distinction between public and private sectors; Basic of accounting for Not-For-Profit(NFP): classification of NFP; Basic characteristics of governmental accounting; Structure of Governmental Accounting in Nigeria: The Treasury, Audit Department and it use; Consolidated Revenue Fund; Capital and Development Fund

ACC 417 – MANAGEMENT INFORMATION SYSTEM

Introduction to and fundamentals of data processing – brief history and conventional data processing methods; manual methods and mechanized methods. Classification of systems and their relative merits.  Closed loop and open loop systems; Effect on time-lag, total system approach and objectives. Total systems and sub-systems. Data Processing and Management Information System (MIS). The organization of MIS including the use of mechanical and electronic accounting machines, flow carting and the principles of systems design and documentation. Managerial uses of the information output as a basis for developing criteria and systems. Information needs of management and design of MIS. Computer and data processing. Evolution of the computer and the computer system input, output,  and central processing unit. Hardware and software. Introduction to common computer programming languages used in business (COBOL, FORTRAN, SPSS, etc). Electronic data processing (EDP) methods: batch processing, real time processing and the management of EDP. Business systems hierarchical structure of organizations. The sub-optimization issue. ACC 421 – ADVANCED FINANCIAL ACCOUNTING AND REPORTING II

Review of ACC 411, Accounting Problems of group companies including multinationals, Takeovers, mergers, Reconstructions, Reorganization, Associated companies, Accounting for Acquisitions and mergers.   Accounting for foreign Operations, Foreign branches, Affiliates, Methods of conversion etc., Valuation of shares and businesses, Going concern and break-up basis, Bankruptcy and insolvency: Requirements of the statute and Accounting for Bankruptcy and insolvency, Accounting for specialized transactions: Investments and securities, and pension fund (IAS 26), Accounting for Banks and insurance industries, with special reference to relevant legislations, Interpretation of financial statements: Ratio analysis for working capital and statements of Cash flows; and objectives of Disclosure. Accounting theory relating to incomes, depreciation, inventory valuation, goodwill, Research and Development and other deferred revenue, expenditure, consistency, comparability, flexibility etc.

 

ACC 422 – MANAGEMENT ACCOUNTING II

This course is aimed at getting cadets to develop the ability to collect, analyze, and communicate quantitative and non-quantitative information to assist management in making more effective planning and control decisions. Topics include the changing role of management accounting and basic concepts; product costing and cost accumulation; process costing and hybrid product costing systems; activity-based costing and activity-based management; activity analysis, absorption and variable costing; profit planning and activity-based budgets; standard costing and flexible budgeting; cost management tools; and decision making. Budgets, Budgeting and Budgetary Control. Preparation of master budget and subsidiary budgets including cash budget. Application qualitative techniques e.g., statistical methods such least squires, standard definition, correlation regression etc. Capital investment appraisal techniques. Measurement of divisional performance and control including behavioural aspects of accounting.

 

ACC 423 – PUBLIC SECTOR ACCOUNTING II

Financial Accounting and Analysis: Use of self- accounting system, Fund accounting system, and Standardized uniforms for transactions; Decision making, planning and Control of Public Fund: Application of costing methods; Budgeting processes (IPSAS 24); Accounting for Local Government, Educational and Health institutions; History and Evolution of IPSAS: Meaning, Objective, Scope, Due process; Convergence of IPSAS with IFRS; Detailed studies on IPSAS Reporting.

ACC 424 – FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT II

ACC 425 – AUDITING & INVESTIGATIONS II

Advanced auditing procedures: internal control procedures, organization structures’ Features of internal control, system checking and limitation, Inventory and cash cycle procedure, System design and audit consideration; Audit policy; Audit of group accounting; Assessment of materiality and application of judgment; The post audit client review; The audit of accounts of solicitors and charitable and other non-profit oriented undertakings; Audit of computerized-based accounting system; Investigation for clients prior to investment in and acquisition of business; The audit report: statutory requirements for audit report (CAMA 1990) Types of audit report; Professional requirements, duties and powers under statue and case law, Independence and ethical consideration

 

ACC 426 – INTERNATIONAL ACCOUNTING II

Problems of fluctuating exchange rates.  Accounts for foreign branches and subsidiaries.  The problems of different regulating frameworks and standards in preparation of accounts of multi-national companies.  Inter-governmental national income comparisons.  Project financing institutions like the World Bank, IMF, IPO UNO in different counties.  Investment and closure by present companies methods of transfer of dividends, cost of foreign subsidiaries.  Control problems of foreign companies; methods of transfer of dividends, cost of foreign products, funds for foreign directors etc. Treatment of International Accounting Standards (IAS): Foreign Currency Translation IAS 21, Preparation, Translation and Analysis of Financial Statements of Multinational Companies IAS 21; Additional International Financial Reporting Issues: (a) Inflation Accounting IAS 29, (b) Segment Reporting –IFRS 8; Accounting and Control Problems of Foreign Companies; Method of Transfer of Dividends; Cost of Foreign Products, funds for directors etc.

 

ACC 427 – BUSINESS POLICY AND STRATEGIC MANAGEMENT

This course gives an overview of all essential aspects of business policy and strategic management. The intention is to provide students with strategy insights; reflect on strategic dilemmas; and practice strategy tools to enable students to become strategic thinkers. The course will cover strategy analysis, formulation of strategies at different levels of the organization, and strategy implementation. The course will also reflect on the purpose of organizations, their governance, and their role towards shareholders, stakeholders and society in general. Topics covered include: Strategy and the quest for competitive advantage; Strategic intent and strategy formulation; Strategic analysis; Analyzing company’s external environment; Corporate portfolio analysis; Generic competitive Strategies; Grand Strategies; Tailoring strategy to fit specific industry; Strategy Implementation; New business models and strategies for internet economy; behavioural issues in strategy implementation; Functional issues in organizations; and Strategy Evaluation.

 

ACC 499 – RESEARCH PROJECT

Developing student skills in analyzing and writing reports based on a empirical or library study of a specific study of a specific subject matter or topic in relevant administration or management studies.  Students would present a research-based report of not less than 2,000 words at the end of the session.
