Professor Sydney Chinedu Osuala MSc, PhD, is a Mathematician, Scientist and an Educationist.  He was born on 3rd November, 1956, at Amaokpara in Nkwerre Local Government Area of Imo State, Nigeria.  He attended St Stephen’s Primary School, Onitsha-Ugbo in Aniocha Local Government Area of Delta State, St Augustine’s Grammar School, Nkwerre and Dick Tiger Secondary School, Amaigbo in Nkwerre Local Government Area of Imo State from where he obtained a Division One in 1974.  He then proceeded to Kharkov State University, Kharkov, Ukraine, where he bagged both his MSc and PhD in Mathematics in 1982 and 1986, respectively.

Prof Osuala commenced his academic career at the University of Lagos in 1987 as a Lecturer II. He joined the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA), Kaduna in 1989, as a Lecturer II but was later upgraded to Lecturer I in 1991.  He got promoted to Senior Lecturer and Associate Professor in 1997 and 2006 respectively.  He became a Professor of Mathematics in 2009.

During the course of his academic career in the Nigerian Defence Academy, Kaduna, Prof Osuala served as Head, Dept of Mathematics; Head, Dept of Comp Science; Head, Dept of Maths/Comp Science (Merger of the Departments of Mathematics and Comp Science) and Dean, Faculty of Science at various times as follows:

His academic awards include Federal Government Scholar, 1976 to 1982 and 1982 to 1986 and the Best Graduating Student, School of Preliminary Studies, Kharkov State University, Ukraine, 1977. He was awarded an M.Sc. Degree in Mathematics in 1982 and a Ph.D. Degree with specialization in Differential Equations and Analysis in 1986.

For many years now he has been teaching undergraduate and postgraduate courses in mathematics at NDA and has supervised many cadets’ projects. Presently, he is supervising MSc and PhD theses at the NDA Postgraduate School. He has served as external examiner in PhD dissertations. In 2000, he wrote a program for the Preparation of Cadets’ Result in NDA, which has been in use ever since. He was a member of the Editorial Board of the Academy Journal of Defence Studies. Presently, he is the Editor-In-Chief of the prestigious Academy Journal of Science and Engineering - a journal published and managed jointly by the Faculties of Science and Engineering. Prof Osuala is also currently a Board member and Head of NDA Consult.

He has headed many committees. He is a member of many organizations among them are: the Nigerian Mathematical Society, Computer Association of Nigeria and the Mathematical Association of Nigeria. He was a resource person to the United Nations on ICT matters.

A sound mathematician, Prof Osuala pursues his research interests in Differential Equations and Analysis.  He has published over 20 journal articles in local and international learned journals.  He has presented research papers in many Learned Conferences held within Nigeria and overseas, and also played major roles in the organisation of some seminars and conferences among them is the First International Conference in Military Operations Research organised by NDA in 2004.

Prof Osuala is married to Mrs. Margarita Osuala (nee Eringenskaya) and the marriage is blessed with three (3) children.  His hobbies include Golfing, Current Affairs and Travelling.
